Today's blog is "dedicated" to Ben, Dieter and Monika's dog that kept many a
volunteer company during their stay with us. He bravely defended his home from
"porcupine attack" and ended up with a quill that went through the roof of his

Cheetahs at Moholoholo

I have been quiet for a long time, sorry about that, I will try to do better from now on.

Where to start with all the latest news?

Two cheetahs have been released on Moholoholo. Although the cheetah do not see us or the horses as prey, the horses do not seem to realise that. At this stage they are reacting quite a bit - the famous "fright, flight, fight" instinct is kicking in here. We hope to have photies soon, at this stage we need both hands on the reins.

Secondly after 45 years of living in the bush I have apparently been bitten by a spider, not a pleasant experience at all. Have not been able to use my right hand properly for quite some time - extremely frustrating.

Annika, thanks so much for the letter and cd with photos, I really like your dog and is looking forward to meeting him/her in July.

Hi 2007 volunteers

Had a message from Georgie to say that you RVC guys are having a reunion soon and that Emma is also coming - enjoy! Wish we could join.

Just a quick update on Honey Monster (will post a photie of the "new" monster soon)

While Des (her new owner) was away on a well deserved holiday her well meaning care taker (important not to mention names here) decided not to reduce her concentrates. To make a long story short, Honey turned into Monster, when Nikki
and myself went to tick spray her, Nikki decided to bare back her to her stable. I was leading Honey - was of course not walking in her shoulder - Nikki had the bottle with tickspray, fly fringe etc in her hands. Next instant Honey shoulders
me into the ground (I have the scars to prove it) and takes off with Nikki towards some nearby trees with low branches - Nik holding several items in her hands. The obvious happened. Now Monster is a rehab case of a different kind.

The good news is her eyes are sparkling and she is oozing confidence - real job satisfaction for her on the successful training of her human caretakers.

Will let you know how the first training session goes.

You proved once again that what seems impossible is indeed possible.

Louisa managed to fall off Sam while he very discreetly tried to get hold of a special blade of grass - she claims that he pulled her out of the saddle. Blatant lying of course. Why did you hold onto the rein? Surely not to keep Sammie from taking off.

This happened while riding back stop in Moholoholo. One guest gave her a tip for entertainment value. ha-ha.

Honey Monster's Good News!!!

We took Honey Monster to her new home yesterday. She really got what she deserves. About 2 hectares of green grass only for her, with all the lucerne and concentrates that she needs.

A big thankyou to Desiree for taking on the responsibility. She will no doubt bring you lots of joy.

Leadership tussle .....

There will be at some point a tussle for the leadership position between you and your human. Humour them and allow them to think they are the boss while quietly watching them muck out your stable, fill your water buckets, pick out your feet and struggle to manhandle a barrow-load of horse pooh. Remember they frequently work long hours in a job they hate just so that they can pay to do this in their spare time. -

Just to let you all know that Kisha was rehomed - obviously to a very good home.

Her new owner is thrilled with her even though she is still very green. He is an experienced trainer and has already taken her on a few outrides.

Thank you once again for all the work you put into giving her confidence during her rehabilitation.

Rain .... better hay prices?

As this year's Whipalong volunteers will know we had massive veld fires that caused big problems with hay for our horses.

Although we had some early rain it was not enough to make a big difference. But we now had lots of rain. The dam in Moholoholo that was dry due to the drought has a bit of water and the bush is green with new leaves.

Soon this should make a difference to hay prices. Already we are breathing a sigh of relief - just wish you guys were here to groom off all the mud and help treat thrushy feet.

Rehabilitation of Honey Monster

A big thank you to all our volunteers who spent so much time with our little dun mare, Honey Monster. She is finally becoming more Honey than Monster and is even looking like a real horse!

Our Dutch volunteer, Anika rode her down in the school area yesterday and little Honey looked so cute. We walked her around for about 10 minutes before she lost a bit of concentration. We are still battling to get proper hay after the fires, but managed to get hold of some A-grade lucern and Honey is loving it.

We'll post some photos soon, so you can have a look at Honey with dapples on her coat.

To all the volunteers, something to keep you chuckling for a few days. Kate had
her first fall in Moholoholo!!!

Much to the dismay of our new volunteers, Kate
found herself sprawling on the ground after Murphy "saved" her from a killer
wharthog which was about to munch them alive.

There was general concern about the fact that the one supposed to keep everyone else safe, was not able to stay on the horse herself.

All I can say is, "Chocolate cake, anyone??"
